Where a Nortel switchboard is still in service at a site in Yemen and nobody there was given the manuals, that is a workable starting position. Why a Nortel system may still be carrying a Yemeni institution
Nortel equipment was specified for buildings that could not afford to stop — ministries and governorate administrations, universities, hospitals, port authorities and older banks — because it was durable, and durable equipment can outlast the support arrangements around it. Where a Meridian 1 or Option 11C cabinet is still in a plant room in Sana’a or Taiz, or a Norstar or BCM is still serving a clinic in Aden or Seiyun, the first work is to establish the release, the programming and the maintenance path before anything is changed.
The awkward part is that Nortel no longer exists as a supplier. Nortel’s enterprise voice business became part of Avaya, and Avaya has since ended sales and manufacturer support for the CS1000 line. A move to Mitel is a platform change to a different vendor; EIE plans it from an assessment of the installed release, licensing, handset and trunk compatibility, and lifecycle — not from any vendor lineage. None of that helps with the card that failed this morning, so the practical question is not whether Nortel is current. It is whether this system can be kept serviceable at a sensible cost, and what the exit looks like when it cannot. We are content to recommend keeping an old system running when that is the right call.

How delivery works for customers in Yemen

Remote diagnostics from Jeddah. Where a maintenance path exists, our Saudi engineering team reads the system, establishes the release and the fault, and confirms which part is needed before anything is bought. Some of these systems present only a serial console.
Parts sourcing and shipment. Cards and modules are sourced against the confirmed requirement, tested before dispatch, and can normally be shipped by sea to Aden or Mukalla or by road through the Saudi-Yemeni land crossings, with import handled by the customer’s freight forwarder and customs broker. To avoid a second import cycle for a single card, we agree the parts a system is likely to need and send them together. Equipment supply is confirmed at quotation and is subject to the vendor’s export and re-export rules for the destination, restricted-party and end-use screening, customs documentation, and carrier and route availability at the time of shipment.

Attendant behaviour, queues and paging circuits are rebuilt and tested before cutover, and gateways then let the Nortel system and the Mitel platform run together while departments move.
